Collective Language offering youth-driven self-expression

Youth from all over the Owens Valley are being called on to support and even participate in a growing effort to showcase the area’s rich local talent pool – and enjoy free entertainment.
Organized by the very artists who will be performing, Collective Language is an eclectic, monthly offering featuring live music of varying styles, live art demonstrations and a safe and healthy environment for anyone of any age looking to have a good time.
The next Collective Language concert happens tomorrow, June 22, beginning at 6 p.m. at the WĂĽnĂĽt Novi on the Bishop Paiute Reservation

NPS putting together plan for Saline Valley

Officials with the National Park Service have extended the scoping period for public input to help inform the development of a management plan and Environmental Impact Statement for the Saline Valley Warm Springs area of Death Valley National Park.
Comments for this phase of the planning process will now be accepted until Aug. 6, 2012.
“Public input is very important to this planning process, and the NPS is extending the comment period to allow for all members of the interested public to share their perspectives and suggestions,” a press release from the National Park Service states.

Ham Radio Field Day this weekend in LP

Despite the Internet, cell phones, e-mail and modern communications, every year whole regions find themselves cut off. Tornadoes, fires, storms, ice and even the occasional cutting of fiber optic cables leave people without the means to communicate.
In these cases, the one consistent service that has never failed has been Amateur Radio.
This weekend, local Owens Valley “hams” will join thousands of amateur radio operators throughout the U.S. in demonstrating their emergency communications skills.
