Inyo County leaders will meet today to discuss creating a local Area Agency on Aging, public safety realignment and mandatory recycling laws that will be implemented this July.
The Board of Supervisors, which is scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. in the County Administrative Center in Independence, will also consider a number of new hires in the Public Works Department, Water Department, Probation Department and Health and Human Services Department.
Local leaders in the law enforcement community are taking time this week to recognize and thank their support staff who donât always wear a badge or drive a squad car, but are none-the-less instrumental in serving and protecting the communities of the Eastern Sierra.
Each year, the second week in April is dedicated to the men and women who serve as public safety dispatchers.
Locally there are four dispatch centers: the Inyo County Sheriffâs Office, Bishop Police Department, CHP and the Owens Valley Interagency Dispatch.

Inyo County is facing a lawsuit associated with allegations that District Attorney Art Maillet wrongfully terminated his assistant without providing the proper employee reviews or explanations.
Attorney Will Richmond was hired as a temporary Assistant District Attorney on Oct. 5, 2010 before being brought on full-time as the Assistant D.A. on Jan. 1, 2011.
Eastern Sierra Rugby Club was tougher on defense in its rematch with the Belmont Shore club, but still fell in its final game of the regular season, March 31.
The Jacks matched the same number of points, 12, scored against Belmont during their first meeting and held the top ranked team to 16 fewer points.
The 46-12 loss puts the Jacks into an equally tough first playoff berth, on the road April 21.

A mandatory commercial recycling law, seeking to reduce Californiaâs solid waste by 75 percent through source reduction, recycling and composting, will change the way businesses and residents take out their trash.
In order to help business- and multifamily dwelling-owners comply with the new law, Sierra Conservation Project is offering a free start-up recycling program. Inyo County Integrated Waste Management is offering education, outreach and information as part of mandates of Assembly Bill 341, which spawned the Mandatory Commercial Recycling Law.
Bishop Broncosâ Booster Bunco
The Bishop Broncos Booster Club will hold its annual Bunco event, Saturday, April 28 at 6 p.m. at the Tri-County Fairgrounds.
Tickets are $20 and are available from most coaches or contact Stacy Van Nest at (760) 873-4275 ext. 226. The Boosters are also accepting donations for silent auction items.
Bishop Tennis Club Looking for New Members
With its Spring Tournament coming up April 21, the Bishop Tennis Club is encouraging new memberships with reduced tourney rates.
In what has been described as an experience rarer than walking on the moon, residents reported witnessing an earthquake-related âtsunamiâ at the isolated Devils Hole area of Death Valley National Park.
According to the National Park Service, on March 20, Devils Hole was jolted by the shockwaves from a large-scale earthquake that took place in Oaxaca, Mexico. Devils Hole is located in the Amargosa Valley in Nevada.
Challenger Sports will be holding its British Soccer Camp in Bishop, June 18-22 and July 9-13 at Bishop City Park.
The camps run from Monday through Friday and each child will be coached by a member of Challengerâs team of British soccer coaches.
Challengerâs new coaching syllabus provides an innovative daily regimen of foot-skills, moves, juggling, tactical practices and daily tournament play.

Mule Days event organizers announced Tuesday that concert headliner Terri Clark has cancelled her May 24 appearance at the Tri-County Fairgrounds.
âItâs our understanding Ms. Clark cancelled four West Coast appearances in May, including ours, due to scheduling conflicts,â Barbara Laughon, Bishop Mule Days spokesman, said. âWhile naturally this is a disappointment, we are in talks with another nationally-recognized vocalist who is willing to step in at this late date.â

Phase one of the Warren Street Improvements project â conceived to functionally and aesthetically rejuvenate and expand Bishopâs commercial district â is under way and City of Bishop Public Works Department is actively soliciting public input.
