City Council makes recent election official

With the first consolidated election between the city and county in the books and new City Council members elected by the people, County Clerk-Recorder Kammi Foote met with the Bishop City Council Monday to discuss how election day went.
Before the council certified the city’s election results, Foote said she wanted to look at what cost savings were realized by consolidating the election and what, if any, changes city leaders would like to see before the next election.

Local icon turns 90

For those who may not yet know it yet, Dr. Robert Denton is an Eastern Sierra icon, a local legend as a country doctor. Though he’ll soon be turning 90, Denton said, “I’m the youngest of them,” referring to country doctors, “the last.”
Indeed, the passage of time seems meaningless to Denton when he animatedly recounts childhood adventures, medical exploits and strongly-held political, philosophical and spiritual beliefs.

Bishop budget a ‘year-round balancing act’

It looks like the City of Bishop will enter the 2013-2014 fiscal year with a sound, flexible blueprint it can use to guide government spending and revenue.
Although the 2013-14 budget, the second year of a two-year budget, is in its final stages, a city spending plan is a complex, year-round balancing act, said Assistant Finance Director Cheryl Solesbee. The entire budget, or cost of running the city, during
the 2013-14 fiscal year is projected to be $9,525,113. That is down from $10,692,150 for 2012-13 and up from the 2011-12 budget of $8,769,175.

Fairgrounds CEO bids fond farewell to a job he loved

Disneyland is supposed to be the “happiest place on Earth.” But in the Owens Valley, that title has to go to the Tri-County Fairgrounds, or at least that’s the image Jim Tatum had in mind, without the rodents with oversized heads, when he took the job of Chief Executive Officer 20 years ago.
“Ninety-eight percent of the fairground events are for fun,” he said. “Even the wakes turn into parties. You just walk around the Fair, as small as our community is, you see relationships rekindled. That’s why every tree has a bench around it. The Fair is a social event.”

Six young ladies will be putting their wit, poise, talent and yes, beauty, to the test this week in Bishop’s first-ever, area-wide beauty pageant.
Charismatic and confident, the contestants have survived an intensive six-week pageant preparation class and a challenging judges interview, said Kristina Roberts, a Parks and Recreation staff member, former pageant contestant and now the City of Bishop pageant founder and coordinator.
