2012 will mark the 45th consecutive year that Bishop celebrates the sport of trout fishing by hosting an early-season derby bearing the name of legendary fisherman Blake Jones.
The Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce said it expects upwards of 1,000 anglers from across the state to make their annual pilgrimage to Inyo County to participate in the Saturday, March 17 contest, which is one of the state’s largest annual single-day fishing events.

The Bishop Paiute Tribe is getting off to a busy start in 2012 with a number of projects aimed at improving the community and the offerings at its largest commercial enterprise.
The tribe is currently working on a renovation process at the Paiute Palace Casino to update decor, provide more room at the TuKaNovie restaurant and create what it calls a more comfortable gaming experience.

High Sierra Energy Foundation, the local group self-elected to promote the benefits of energy conservation and efficiency, is back on the radar. In the summer of 2011, the entire board decided to step down, hoping for new members and a fresh start to the program.
The foundation and partner Southern California Edison gave a presentation Monday to the Bishop City Council on its past and future endeavors. According to SCE, it has been promoting and making headway against energy loss and inefficiency with its Energy Action Plan.
Joseph Mikalowsky
1938-2011
Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and died in Lone Pine, California at age 73.
Joe joined the U.S. Air Force in May 1957, served proudly for 28 years including tours in Vietnam and Korea and then retired to Lone Pine.
During his 26 years in Lone Pine, Joe served as the VFW Post Commander, manager of the Mt. Whitney Golf Club and helped Ernie Laskey at Ernie’s Tin Roof by Diaz Lake.
Joe was well known and liked by many, he will be greatly missed.
Kermit Douglas Greer
1955-2012
Kermit Douglas Greer, born Jan. 3, 1955 in Orange County, Calif. at St. Joseph’s Hospital, passed away Jan. 9, 2012.
Kermit had a true passion for life and conversation. He loved being involved in the Native American culture. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and all the neighbor kids. He had a passion for hiking, biking, golfing, camping and especially learning.
Roy Wayne Brown
1929-2012
Roy Brown of Bakersfield passed away in Bakersfield Memorial Hospital from pneumonia after surgery on a broken leg.
Roy was born Dec. 22, 1929 to Sanford Jonah and Hazel Brown in Texola, Okla. The family moved to California when Roy was 7 years old and settled in Delano where he went to school and graduated from Delano High School in 1947.
