Inyo Countyâs food banks and others are getting ready for what is expected to be a huge demand for holiday food baskets and, for many, a meal to get themselves and maybe their family through the day.
Inyo Mono Advocates for Community Action will begin accepting applications for the Holiday Food Basket Program next Wednesday, Oct. 5. The program provides holiday meal essentials to low-income households throughout Inyo County, Chalfant and Benton. The holiday food drive, set to begin in November, is also IMACAâs major drive to keep its food bank shelves full until the spring.

J.D. Salingerâs popular âThe Catcher in the Ryeâ is considered requisite reading by both scholars and literary snobs, and locally, the community came together to read and discuss Sherman Alexieâs work âThe Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian.â
However, if the censors had their way, those books would have been banned from the shelves of libraries, classrooms and even book stores.
The efforts to ban books such as âCatcherâ and âPart Time Indian,â and ultimately the triumph of the First Amendment, are in focus Sept. 24 through Oct. 1 as the U.S. observes National Banned Books Week.

1954-2011
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 25 at Brune Mortuary Chapel in Bishop for longtime Bishop resident Warren D. Pueblo. Shirley Summers will officiate. Burial will be at Sunland Cemetery in Bishop. A cry-dance will be held the evening of Saturday, Sept. 24 at 60 N. Barlow Ln.
Born Feb. 17, 1954 in Bishop, Warren passed away Sept. 17, 2011 at Renown Medical Center in Reno. He was 57.
Ernest ‘Neto’ Fernandez
1927-2011
Ernest “Neto” Fernandez was born May 12, 1927 in San Fernando and passed away peacefully on Sept. 21, 2011 in Bishop. Our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and superb storyteller loved to laugh, sing, play guitar, cook and fish. We will all miss his generous spirit.
Preceded in death by parents Maximo and Angelita Fernandez; sister, Gloria Rojas; brothers, Max Fernandez, Benigno Fernandez and Victor Fernandez.

As the culmination of a month dedicated to addiction awareness, the public is invited to a recovery celebration at the Bishop City Park.
Throughout the month of September, National Recovery Month, there has been a push by the Inyo County Addictions Task Force and its partner agencies to raise awareness of those with addictions and those in recovery throughout Inyo County.

One of Bishopâs most important cultural resources is getting some financial aid from Southern California Edison.
According to Emma Williams of the Bishop Paiute Tribe, SCE has awarded a $10,000 grant for restoration of the Owens Valley Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center on West Line Street in Bishop.
Williams said the Edison grant will be used to install a new security system.
âThe whole grant will probably go to the new electric security system, which we hope to have up next month,â Williams said. âThere are also ongoing projects, like archiving and updating the database.â
