1949-2011

A celebration of life for Mammoth resident Robbie Perry Smith is planned for 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at the McGee Creek Inn on Crowley Lake Drive.
Born Nov. 22, 1949 in Hollywood to Helen Beuscher and Robert C. Smith, Robbie died Sunday, April 10, 2011 from complications of a long-standing illness.
His illness could not diminish his kind, funny and generous spirit. Robbie’s sweet nature and gentle personality will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Allen Spoonhunter Memorial Gym in Big Pine for Big Pine resident James Michael Shoshone.
Born Dec. 28, 1970 in Shurz, Nev. to Marion Spratt and Benny Shoshone, James died Saturday, April 16 in Big Pine.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Independence Cemetery for 45-year Inyo County resident Warren LeRoy Morefield. Pastor Erin McPhee will officiate.
Born June 11, 1921 in St. Louis, Mo. to Arthur and Francis Morefield, Warren died April 10, 2011 at Sterling Heights in Bishop. He was 89.
Warren moved to Los Angeles with his mother, father and brother, Lloyd, during the Depression.

Fishing may still go on at South Lake this spring

Southern California Edison and the Forest Service have made additional information available concerning upcoming South Lake dam work and access.
A press release dated Wednesday, April 13 states, “Southern California Edison and the Forest Service would like to take this opportunity to clarify issues of access to South Lake while the upgrade work to the dam is occurring this spring and summer.

Wild Wild West Run in Alabama Hills
The 33rd Wild Wild West run through the Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, Saturday, May 7 starts at Tuttle Creek Campground at 6 a.m. and ends at the Lone Pine Park.
The event includes a 50 K, a marathon, a 10-mile, a 3-mile fun run, and, to celebrate 30 years, a 15-mile run.
Fees, which include a goody bag and T-shirt, are: 50K, $75; Marathon, $70; 10-mile, $60. The cost for the 3-mile fun run is $10 but does not include the shirt.
The award ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. at the Lone Pine Park.

LP track team udpate

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles track team headed to Boron April 13 for a five-way Desert Mountain League meet.
Lone Pine competed against Silver Valley, Vasquez, Mojave and Boron.
Josafat Luna claimed two wins in the boys’ hurdles events.
Emmanuel Castro took first in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:29 as well as a second in the 400.
Jareth Eaton’s 5-6 high jump was a first-place effort.
Castro, Eaton and Luna were also on the boys’ 400 meter relay team, along with Sawyer Entwistle. The team took second place.
Genesee Lucia placed second in the girls’ discus.

Broncos JV: tough loss to Rosamond

While they showed improvement, the Bishop JV softball team fell to the Rosamond Roadrunners 11- 16 last Friday.
Offensively, the Lady Broncos scored 7 more runs than they did against Kern Valley on April 12. The team also struck out only six times to Rosamonds’s 11.
The stat that made the difference for the Roadrunners was the errors. Bishop recorded 10, five in the third inning alone, compared to Rosamond’s four.
INDIVIDUAL STATS

Brooke Callahan struck out 11, allowed 8 hits, 1 walk
Offense:
Natalie Hollowell: 3 for 5, and 2 runs, 1 RBI
Yvonna Chandler: 2 for 5

Lone Pine Eagles batter Lucerne Valley Mustangs

The Lone Pine Lady Golden Eagles softball squad hasn’t had a stellar year. The core of Eagles athletes who killed in volleyball with an undefeated league season, were spoilers right through to the semi-finals in basketball playoffs, but spring has not been kind to them.
Some of their mojo came back Saturday morning when the Eagles beat the Lucerne Valley Mustangs decisively at 19-13.

Graveside services will be announced at a later date for 15-year Big Pine resident Audrey F. Chapdelaine.
Born Oct. 24, 1928 in Norfolk, Va., Audrey died at her home in Big Pine on April 14, 2011. She was 82.
Audrey was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved her family dearly and loved her animals as well. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Death Valley wildflowers at their peak

The 2011 wildflower season is at its peak in Death Valley and Southern Inyo. Reports are that this is not the most prolific year for petals and color, but the flowers are out and they’re going fast.
Chief of Interpretation for Death Valley National Park Terry Baldino reported at the end of March that the flowers are small but abundant.
“If people want to see the flowers this year they’re going to have to get out of the car and look around,” Baldino said.
