Volunteer numbers for the Inyo County Mentor Program continue to rise thanks to efforts by Inyo County Health and Human Services to raise awareness of local youth in need of guidance from older role models.
Health and Human Services is planning an appreciation dinner for the five adult volunteers who are working with or training to work with local youth. The county is also asking anyone who would like to volunteer with the program to sign up for the program.
Local men and woman who have devoted themselves to caring for one of the Eastern Sierraâ€™s most precious landscapes have been recognized by the Sierra Business Council with a 2011 Vision Award.
Announced earlier this month, the Sierra Vision Award is being accepted by the Alabama Hills Stewardship Program as both a validation of the groupâ€™s blood, sweat and tears and a source of inspiration as they continue their efforts to preserve and protect the public lands west of Lone Pine.
Craig William Finestine
A celebration of life will be held at a later date for Craig William Finestine.
Born March 6, 1956, Craig died unexpectedly of natural causes March 20, 2011.
Craig was a simple man with a unique sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by his parents, Diane and Ron; sister, Cindy; brother, Cameron; and twin nephews, Eugene Ronald and Robert Craig.
Curtis Edwin Baker
In accordance with his wishes, no funeral services will be held for Curtis Edwin Baker.
Born in Long Beach to Curtis and Elizabeth Baker in 1924, Curtis died at his home March 25, 2011 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was 86.
During World War II, Ed served first with the Merchant Marines, then with the U.S. Navy. After leaving the service, Ed joined the Long Beach Fire Department in 1946, retiring as a captain 31 years later.
Catherine Joy Anderson
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Memorial Anglican Church in Lone Pine for Catherine Joy (Spainhower) Anderson. A lunch reception for family and friends will follow the service at the Parish Hall.
Born Nov. 26, 1918 in Los Angeles to Russel and Kate Spainhower of Lone Pine, Joy died March 22, 2011.
There will be graveside services at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16 at East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop for Gloria Rojas. Immediately following the services will be a celebration of Gloria’s life at the Elks Lodge, 151 E. Line St.
Gloria died peacefully in San Diego on Jan. 1, 2011 after a brief illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John.
Judy Kay (Sublette) Griswold
No funeral services have been announced for Judy Kay (Sublette) Griswold.
Born Oct. 18, 1956 in San Diego to James C. and Ruth E. (Burgess) Sublette, Judy died in her home in South Lake on March 21, 2011.
Judy was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth E. (Burgess) Britz; father, James C. Sublette, Sr.; brother, James C. Sublette Jr.; sister, Mitzi; and grandson, Steven David Whisler.
Ila Bessie Connell (Haslam)
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2 at the First Baptist Church in Big Pine for Ila Bessie Connell (Haslam).
Born Aug. 13, 1922 in Palos Verdes to Warren B Haslam and Edna D. Robinson Haslam, Ila, a beloved grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, died March 20, 2011.
Ila was the last survivor of seven children.
John Shirly Allred
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 26 at the East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop for 45-year Bishop resident John Shirly Allred. Winnedumah Masonic Lodge No. 827 will officiate. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at Seventh Day Adventist Church in Bishop with Pastor Randy Skoretz officiating. Visitation will be from noon-5 p.m. Friday, March 25 at Brune Mortuary in Bishop.
