Human remains found in desert near Nevada

A grim discovery in a remote region of southeastern Inyo County has authorities searching for answers.
Sheriff’s investigators are attempting to piece together clues that may lead to a positive ID and possibly even cause of death for a body found late last week near Pahrump, Nev.
An individual recreating in the desert last Friday located what are said to be skeletal remains in a remote area west of Pahrump.
According to Inyo County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Carma Roper, “the remains were fairly deteriorated, so they could have been out there for months.”

High profile cases return to court

Three high-profile criminal cases will be returning to Inyo County Superior Court today. Murder suspects Louis LePlat and Edward Keller, Jr. along with self-confessed arsonist John Christiana will appear before a judge today in Independence.
Christiana was scheduled to appear for sentencing Tuesday, Feb. 8 but, according to the Court Clerk’s Office, his date was pushed back due to a long calendar that day. The office also said he is acting as his own counsel, or pro per.

Graveside services will be held at noon Friday, Feb. 11 at the East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop, followed by a reception at the VFW at 2 p.m. for Thomas L. Cone.
Born June 4, 1930 in Lubbock, Texas to Thomas Fowler Cone and Maggie Bloys Cone, Thomas died Feb. 7, 2011. He was 80.

John Charles Bodine, Sr. 1944-2011

Burial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Pioneer Cemetery in Bishop for long-time Bishop resident John Charles Bodine, Sr. The Rev. Caddy Jackson will officiate. A memorial service will follow from 1-4 p.m. at the Highlands Mobile Home Park Senior Center in Bishop.
Born June 24, 1944 to John A. and Chris T. Bodine in Bell, John died Feb. 2, 2011 at Olive View Hospital in Sylmar. He was 66.

American Legion ‘adopts’ local veterans

Members of the Big Pine American Legion are pooling their resources to honor and help local veterans.
Through its new Adopt-A-Vet program, the post has found a way to pay special tribute to community members deserving of recognition for their service to this country.
In 2011, the Big Pine Legion has selected Robert Cox and Robin Sparks, both of Big Pine, for adoption. To show the post’s appreciation, the Legion recently presented Cox with a Big Pine Warriors Jacket and Sparks with a $50 gift certificate for Kmart.

Students giving voice to centuries’ old library of literary treasures

High school students throughout Inyo County will be competing for the first year in the national Poetry Out Loud competition. Winners will go on to the nation’s capitol to compete for a chance at more than $20,000 in cash and prizes.
Poetry Out Loud challenges thousands of students in the U.S. to interpret, memorize and recite famous poetry. The class competitions have already been completed or are about to commence at high schools in Bishop, Independence, Lone Pine and Big Pine.

IMACA to gather input on need in low-income sector

A series of town hall meetings will be held in March to gather input on the needs of low-income families throughout Inyo and Mono counties.
Jane McDonald of Inyo-Mono Advocates for Community Action said IMACA holds these meetings every two years to adjust its Community Action Plan, and attempt to meet the changing needs of the community. McDonald explained that this is a way for the group “to keep the finger on the pulse” of the community.
The meetings are also a way for IMACA to plan ahead, financially, in trying to meet demands.

Rich ‘Chief’ Richardson

Funeral services will be held at 1 a.m. today at Brune Mortuary Chapel in Bishop for 48-year Bishop resident Rich “Chief” Richardson. The Rev. Caddy Jackson will officiate. Burial will be at the East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop.
Born Feb. 9, 1918 in Long Beach, Chief died Feb. 1, 2011 in Bishop. He was 93.
Chief served 24 years in the U.S. Navy, then 15 years with Contel Telephone Company in Bishop.

Bocce Ball course opens at Bishop City Park

Bishop bocce ball beginners and experts now have a place to practice.
The Bishop Bocce Association and city Parks and Recreation officials recently completed construction of Bishop’s first bocce course at the City Park.
The $1,000 project began last year with fundraising efforts by the Bishop Bocce Club, and culminated Wednesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony and Mayor Jeff Griffiths throwing the first official ball.
