Donna Jean Loge
A celebration of life will be held from noon-2 p.m. Saturday, March 12 at the Bishop VFW Post at 484 Short St. for 26-year Bishop resident Donna Jean Loge.
Born Aug. 30, 1945 in Portland, Ore., Donna died Feb. 16, 2011 at Carson Tahoe Hospital. She was 65.
Donna was a very caring person, always putting others before herself. She did nursing and home healthcare.
Summer was always fun for Donna and her friends because it was swimming and barbecue time. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Bishop VFW Post No. 8988.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at a later date for Big Pine resident Renee Boling.
Born March 26, 1960 in Bishop to Frank and Peggy Coons, Renee died at home Feb. 13, 2011, following a prolonged illness.
Renee grew up in Bishop, leaving the area in the 1980s and returning in 2006.
She raised four children and cherished each and every one of them. Her family describes her as a woman who would give her heart and soul for anyone. She was a fantastic woman and great mom.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Tamera Lynne Pueblo; and her parents.

Louise Molly Allen

Louise Molly Allen
Following her cremation, a small family celebration of the life of Louise Molly Allen will be set for a future date.
Born Dec. 25, 1925 in Odessa, Texas, Louise died peacefully at Northern Inyo Hospital on Feb. 16, 2011. She was 85.
Louise was the youngest of 12. She moved to Los Angeles at 18 where she met her future husband Leo and married at age 20. They raised nine children in Encino, where she also worked as a certified nurses assistant for 20 years at the motion picture hospital. Louise retired to Bishop in 1996 and was a lifelong Christian.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 at the First Assembly of God Church, 550 E. Post St. in Lone Pine, for Ward Arnold Swadley. Pastor Mike Skaggs will officiate. The family is inviting friends to join them after the service for a luncheon at the church.
Born Oct. 2, 1925 in Missouri, Ward died Feb. 13, 2011 in Lancaster. He was 85.

Leon ‘Buck’ Bills

Services are pending for 80-year Olancha resident Leon “Buck” Bills. The family plans to gather in early summer to celebrate his life.
Born Dec. 31, 1917 in Indiahoma, Okla., Buck died Feb. 18, 2011 in Lone Pine. He was 93.

State’s silence on funding causes local budget concerns

Inyo County is still operating under a cloud of fiscal uncertainty due to state budget concerns, but county department heads continue to tighten their belts and, in most cases, live within their means.
In his annual mid-year budget update, County Administrator Kevin Carunchio said the local government has reason to be proud, but also plenty of reasons to worry.
According to Carunchio, county department heads have held to their mid-year projections without going over budget, but state budget issues may still have an impact.

Forest Service planning now for future planning efforts

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released a proposed planning rule to guide future planning rules. The plan will update procedures that have been in place since 1982. The new proposed planning process will, reportedly, use the latest in science-based approaches to management of lands, such as recognizing and preparing for climate change.
Nancy Upham, public information officer for the Inyo National Forest, called the new planning plan “a framework for integrating resource management.”

Donate blood, save a life

It’s time to pull up a sleeve and save a life. Residents of Southern Inyo are being asked to donate blood, once again, at the Lone Pine Blood Drive and to fulfill the need for plasma throughout the U.S. 395 corridor.
The goal for this year’s drive is 55 pints, up from 50 last year. Jan McKee, senior donor recruitment representative for Untied Blood Service of Reno, said she hopes that new Southern Inyo Coordinator Donna Carson will be bringing in plenty of donors.
The drive will be held from noon-6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1 at Statham Hall.

Indian Basketball Tourney results

February 24, 2011

The Bishop High School and Barlow gymnasiums were the sites of basketball games, every hour on the hour, last weekend. The event: the Bishop Indian Sports Club’s 41st All Indian Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tour-nament, with teams from all over the West in attendance.
The tourney started Friday evening and ended with championship games Sunday afternoon.
Katelyn Lent was crowned tournament queen at the Friday night opener.
