DWP, volunteers continue assault on Buckley tules

In an effort to rehabilitate the Buckley Ponds area east of Bishop, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is teaming up with a group of local volunteers to clear away huge growths of tules.
According to Bishop resident Dick Noles, who is heading up the volunteer effort, the LADWP has already drained and burned Buckley Ponds 2, 3 and 4 and will be heading out again today to see what kinds of equipment will work to clear away the remaining tules.

Ten-year Bishop resident Margarito “Miles” G. Terrasas, age 77, passed away Dec. 22, 2011 at his home with family by his side.
He was born in Brackettville, Texas on Aug. 15, 1934. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
A businessman of 48 years in the manufacturing/welding business, Miles retired to live in Bishop and continued to be a great handyman in retirement.

Lyle Ruppre passed away at his Big Pine residence on Nov. 28, 2011 two days after his 101st birthday.
Survived by his wife Marie, he will always be remembered for his unassuming love and dedication to his family and friends.

Roger Graves, age 67, resident of Inyo County for 58 years, born in Scottsbluff, Neb. June 13, 1944, passed away Dec. 17, 2011 at the Reno VA Hospital.
Finally at peace and gone to be with his late wife Donna Graves.

Zelda Butler

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23 at the Lone Pine Cemetery for 76-year Lone Pine resident Zelda Butler.
Born in 1925 in Long Beach, Zelda passed away Dec. 17 at the age of 86. She was the youngest of 11 children.

Murder suspect pleads not guilty

Bishop resident Harlan Dewey pleaded not guilty to felony charges of murder and voluntary manslaughter during an arraignment in Inyo County Superior Court on Friday, Dec. 16.
The Inyo County Court Clerk’s Office said that Dewey has not been scheduled on the court calendar, but according to representatives from the office, “a settlement” is set for sometime this week.

DWP consultants offer ideas for river 02 worries

Public sentiment so far indicates satisfaction with – or at least the absence of objections to – the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s most recent Lower Owens River Project Report.
Representatives from Ecosystem Sciences, which compiled the 2011 report, met with residents Tuesday to discuss the data that was collected and receive questions and comments.

New leader lined up for Lone Pine School District

Local leaders in Lone Pine announced last week that longtime High School Superintendent Larry Todd will be stepping down in July and current principal Victor Hopper will be taking his place.
Todd technically retired two years ago, but has remained on staff as a part-time superintendent since then until a full-time replacement could be found.
Todd has served as superintendent since 2007, and will remain on board until July, giving him an opportunity to help Hopper transition into his new post.

Hidden Hills solar project getting mixed reviews

Southeastern Inyo County residents are on the fence about a huge solar project proposal near Charleston View, adjacent to the Nevada border.
While many residents have gone on record in support of the project, which will bring jobs to the remote desert communities, others said there are concerns about negative impacts that may be associated with the project.
