Several local businesses, organizations, clubs and residents are offering hot meals and other food donations to ensure nobody in the community has to go without this holiday season.
In Lone Pine, residents have two holiday meal options this week, depending on their age.
Residents can head over to VFW Post No. 8036 for its annual, free community dinner. The Ladies Auxiliary will be serving Thanksgiving dinner from 2-6 p.m., and all are invited to attend.

Broncosâ football coach Bill Egan is not taking this first CIF playoff game Friday against the Mojave Mustangs for granted.
âMojave is a good team,â he said. âThey have a good coach, theyâre well-prepared. It should be a much better game.â Then again, Egan has anticipated âgood gamesâ from Kern Valley, Rosamond and Desert.
Mojave and Bishop are not strangers. Mojave was part of the HDL until 2008. âI know the Mojave coach,â Egan said, âand they know our program.â
Miles Nevin Clair
1926-2010
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sierra Baptist Church in Independence for 52-year Independence resident Miles Nevin Clair. Burial will follow at the Independence Cemetery, followed by a potluck.
Born May 9, 1926, Miles died peacefully at home Nov. 15, 2010 surrounded by loved ones.
Miles is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jeane; son, Thomas; daughter, Dakota; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Local tribal members are waiting to hear if the Bureau of Indian Affairs will certify an election from last week.
According to tribal members, friction between two factions of the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe, which has members spread throughout the country, has created a situation where two separate tribal elections are held each year.
In the past, the BIA has refused to certify either elections, telling tribal members that they must hold one consolidated election.

The seemingly tireless efforts of Superior Court Judge Dean Stout to build a better community have caught the attention of a statewide committee.
Currently the presiding judge of the Inyo County Juvenile Court, Stout has been appointed co-chair for the Judicial Council Advisory Committee on Family and Juvenile Law.
He was named âJuvenile Court Judge of the Yearâ by the Juvenile Court Judges Association in 2006.

Before making any final decisions regarding the future of Owens Valley School, local leaders have decided to take a close look at the possibility of consolidating the Independence school district with another local school.
Owens Valley is facing lapsation, or closure, due to declining enrollment.
The Inyo County Committee on School District Organization, comprised of members of the Inyo County Board of Education, decided Tuesday to perform a unification study that will answer questions about staffing and funding a unified district.

Bishop AYSO teams won six of their age-level division championships at the Kit Carson Area F soccer tournament in Carson City, Nov. 6-7.
âBishop AYSO has spent the past five years developing their youth soccer training programs beginning at U5 level,â said Joe Griego, AYSO regional referee administrator. âThe depth of young talent has produced great success across all age groups. For the first time, Bishop teams have won championships for both boys and girls Sierra division at U12, U15, and U19 levels.â

The Big Pine Warriors advance to the second round of CIF playoffs with a 34-20 win over the Calvary Baptist Cougars Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars played tough, meeting the Warriors TD for TD. With a 21-20 fourth-quarter score, Ryan Carringtonâs interception turned the tide, kicking the Warriors into high gear.
âIâm very pleased with the outcome,â said coach Mark Tilleman. âThe kids put themselves in this position (in the playoffs) and they came through.â

Local law enforcement is trying to contact every household in the county to be sure it has the means to notify all residents of disasters or emergencies in their communities.
The Inyo County Sheriffâs Department tested its CodeRED Emergency Notification System Nov. 4, and is now asking any resident who did not receive an automated call to contact the Sheriffâs Department and have their phone number added to the system.

With the advent of the holiday season comes the approach of the internationally acclaimed Independence Fruitcake Festival.
In addition to hosting and showcasing dozens of homemade fruitcakes and eggnog selections, organizers have added a new spin to this yearâs event, scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19 in the American Legion Hall in Independence.
Complementing the 2010 theme, âAmericaâs Got Fruitcakeâ theme, organizers are inviting all Fruitcake Festival attendees to showcase their talents.
