County utility bills in Independence may soon be going down as solar arrays go up on the County Administrative Center, the Historic Court, Jail and Juvenile Detention Facility.
County leaders tentatively approved a $3.3 million contract with Solar City Corporation for a 612.8 kilowatt photovoltaic electric system for the county buildings in Independence last week.

Engine No. 18, the historic locomotive in Dehy Park in Independence, has been placed on the fast-track to restoration and may be making trips between Independence and Laws sometime in the next several years.
The Carson and Colorado Railway Society received permission from Inyo County and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power last week to make the narrow gauge locomotive operational.

The much anticipated final report into the fatal vehicle accident that occurred Aug. 9 on U.S. 395 is still pending, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Laura Roberts. She said the release of the report is expected to take months, perhaps not until December.
Roberts said the investigation is still hinging on final reports from the multi-agency investigation team. The MAIT is currently busy with multiple major accidents throughout the state and can only complete one investigation at a time, Roberts said.

In keeping with what has become beloved – and fiercely competitive – local tradition, dozens of residents from Inyo and Mono counties vied for prizes and bragging rights at this year’s Tri-County Fair food contests.
Up for grabs in the Cookie, Shish Kabob Barbecue, Homebrewed Beer and Wine and Homemade Salsa and Dip contests were gift certificates and merchandise donated by area businesses, as well as ribbons courtesy of the fairgrounds.
Elizabeth Fay (Libby) Vassar
1937-2010
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23 at the First United Methodist Church for lifelong Bishop resident Elizabeth Fay (Libby) Vassar. Those who attend are asked to wear red and bring a smile.
Born June 30, 1937 to Francis Fay and Charles H. (Mannie) Olds in Bishop, Libby died at the Bishop Care Center after a brief illness on Sept. 12, 2010. She was 73.
Libby married Mitchell M. Vassar in 1953. They had three children, Marcy, Mitch and Missy.
Thornton Jay ‘T.J.’ Marker
1922-2010
Private burial services will take place at Santa Barbara Cemetery in Santa Barbara for seven-year Bishop resident Thornton Jay “T.J.” Marker.
Born in Long Beach on Sept. 4, 1922, T.J. died Sept. 6, 2010 at Northern Inyo Hospital from complications of diabetes. He was 88.
