Fairs are ancient traditions which go back many generations, across many centuries. Even today, going to the local County fair is a childhood rite of passage for most Americans. The sights and the sounds of the carnival lights and music blend with the promising smells of delicious foods amid a cacophony of shouting carnival barkers alongside the excited squeals of laughter and excitement of fairgoers.
Three decades ago, a California resident could walk into the Department of Motor Vehicles and, for the sum of $3.25, leave with a brand-new driverâs license issued to any name of their choosing.
Not only has the price for a CDL increased in the past 30 years to its current $31, but the DMV can now only issue an ID or license with a personâs legal name on it.

The City of Bishop said goodbye and hello to some top personnel at the Sept. 13 City Council meeting.
The departure of City Administrator Rick Pucci was made official with the welcome of his successor, James M. Southworth.
In addition, the resigning Police Chief Kathleen Sheehan said she was happy to be leaving the city in capable hands. âI leave with complete confidence in the department,â she said. The council appointed Lieutenant Chris Carter as interim-chief until a replacement for Sheehan is found.

In the Bishop football teamâs home opener, the Broncos jumped ahead early and never looked back, beating Western Christian, 51-6.
Bishopâs defense was able to pin the Lancers in their own territory much of the night, allowing the Broncosâ offense to have good field position.
âIt was phenomenal,â Bishop coach Bill Egan said of his teamâs defense.
The Broncosâ special teams defense fueled its offense in the opening minutes of the game as Kiko Gonzalez blocked a Lancers punt and dove on the loose ball in the end zone, scoring the Broncosâ first touchdown of the game.
In one of its last tune-ups before Desert Mountain League play begins, the Lone Pine volleyball team won the Bronze Bracket Championship at the 21-team California City Tournament this weekend.
The Lady Eagles struggled against three tough teams in pool play Friday, going 0-2-1.
Lone Pine faced Santa Clarita Christian in its first match and lost, 18-25, in both games. The Lady Cardinals went on to take first in the Silver Bracket.
In the Lady Eaglesâ second match, they played Desert, who placed third in the Gold Bracket and beat Lone Pine 25-4 and 21-25.

Big Pineâs football team endured a third-quarter comeback attempt by Hesperia Christian Saturday to win 56-26.
The Warriors took a big lead early using their no-huddle spread attack.
Big Pineâs first score of the game came when Isaiah Bacoch hit Jesse Chirrick for a touchdown.
Soon after Chirrickâs score, Tyler Amisoneâs interception led to another touchdown for the Warriors, who took a 13-0 first-quarter lead.

A record-setting 106 runners and walkers participated in the 30th Annual Tioga Pass Run held Sunday, Sept. 12.
The race was marked by spectacular weather as morning temperatures were in the low 50s with calm winds. The great weather provided the backdrop for running from an impressive field.
Olympic marathoner Ryan Hall shattered the course record, set in 1986, by nearly 8 minutes. Hall ran the 12.4 mile (20K) course, which gains 3,164 feet feet in elevation, in 1:20:57, at an average pace of 6:53 minutes per mile.
Bishopâs Dan Yarborough followed Hall by 13 minutes.

In a cross-county preseason rumble, the Lone Pine volleyball team swept Bishop Tuesday.
Despite the Lady Eagles winning three straight games, the Lady Broncos made a fight out of the third game.
But in the first game, Lone Pineâs hitting and serving overpowered the Lady Broncos. Serving was key for Lone Pine as the Lady Eagles were 63-65 from the service line.
The Lady Eagles came out on top, winning the first game, 25-13.
Lone Pine jumped ahead, 6-1, in the second game. Bishop fought back, cutting the Lady Eaglesâ lead to 2.
But Lone Pine extended its lead to 13-6 with an 8-0 run.

Representatives from the California Highway Patrol said Monday morning that the extensive report of the deadly crash that killed three and injured 16 on Aug. 9 on U.S. 395 will not be made public until next week.
The report has been purported as ready for release at least three previous times and the reason given for the delay has been the same every time: the CHP commanders and chiefs want to make sure the report is as thorough as possible.

Veterans returning to the Owens Valley from service in Iraq now have extra help in finding and re-securing employment.
Local contractor Dan Stone, at the behest of the U.S. Defense Department, will be helping local returning vets get back to their old jobs â positions they sometimes left at a momentâs notice before being deployed overseas and which the law guarantees they have a right to upon their return.
