Crash report still pending

The much anticipated final report into the fatal vehicle accident that occurred Aug. 9 on U.S. 395 is still pending, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Laura Roberts. She said the release of the report is expected to take months, perhaps not until December.
Roberts said the investigation is still hinging on final reports from the multi-agency investigation team. The MAIT is currently busy with multiple major accidents throughout the state and can only complete one investigation at a time, Roberts said.

Fair announces 2010 food contest winners

They cooked, they baked, they barbecued – they conquered.

In keeping with what has become beloved – and fiercely competitive – local tradition, dozens of residents from Inyo and Mono counties vied for prizes and bragging rights at this year’s Tri-County Fair food contests.

Up for grabs in the Cookie, Shish Kabob Barbecue, Homebrewed Beer and Wine and Homemade Salsa and Dip contests were gift certificates and merchandise donated by area businesses, as well as ribbons courtesy of the fairgrounds.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23 at the First United Methodist Church for lifelong Bishop resident Elizabeth Fay (Libby) Vassar. Those who attend are asked to wear red and bring a smile.
Born June 30, 1937 to Francis Fay and Charles H. (Mannie) Olds in Bishop, Libby died at the Bishop Care Center after a brief illness on Sept. 12, 2010. She was 73.
Libby married Mitchell M. Vassar in 1953. They had three children, Marcy, Mitch and Missy.

Private burial services will take place at Santa Barbara Cemetery in Santa Barbara for seven-year Bishop resident Thornton Jay “T.J.” Marker.
Born in Long Beach on Sept. 4, 1922, T.J. died Sept. 6, 2010 at Northern Inyo Hospital from complications of diabetes. He was 88.

Madeline C. Robinson

1914-2010

Private services will be held at a later date for former Bishop resident Madeline C. Robinson.
Born Jan. 31, 1914 in Riverside to Glenn and Alice Calkins, Madeline died Sept. 18, 2010 in Portland, Ore. She was 96.
Madeline was a nurse in the early 1950s at Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop. She also served as office nurse for Dr. Robert Denton and Dr. C.L. Scott.

Carroll E. Thomas

A private memorial service will be held in the fall for Big Pine resident Carroll E. Thomas.
Born May, 1, 1910 in Clarinda, Iowa, Carroll died at the Bishop Care Center on Sept. 15, 2010. He was 100.
Carroll was the first of eight children. He was preceded in death by his three brothers and three sisters, and also his wife of many years and mother of his sons, Ruth E. Thomas.

Biz expo coming to Bishop

In an act of locals helping locals, the Owens Valley Vendors and Contractors Association and the Bishop Chamber of Commerce are hosting a large-scale networking event complete with agencies seeking contractors for work.
The OVCVA’s Second Annual Business Expo will happen from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the Home Economics Building, at the Tri-County Fairgrounds in Bishop.
One of OVCVA’s founding members, Dan Stone of Stone Equipment Rentals, said he had been approached by many in the community about when another expo was going to be offered.

New Tribal royalty to be chosen

Miss Bishop Paiute Tribe 2009-10 Serena West is preparing to crown her successor this week as the Tribe holds its annual pageant in conjunction with California Indian Days Celebration events, including a parade and pow wow, scheduled to begin Friday, Sept. 25.

Dogged devotion

Residents and visitors are invited to bring their four-legged, winged, hooved and scaled family members – large and small – to St. Timothy’s Anglican Church in Bishop on Sunday, Oct. 3 to have their pets blessed as part of the church's annual offering.
The 2010 Blessing of Animals will begin at 10 a.m. at 700 Hobson St., and complimentary refreshments will be provided to all pets and their human companions after the service.
