Sometimes no news is good news and the past holiday weekend was no exception.
Despite a record-setting snow storm, heavy traffic and bitter temperatures, Inyo County experienced what local first responders are calling a âquietâ holiday weekend. Law enforcement and fire departments had little if anything to report on Monday.

For many local families, the Eastern Sierra Regional Airport played a silent but no less critical role in todayâs Christmas celebrations.
This is particularly true, according to airport officials, if one or more presents unwrapped by happy loved ones this morning was purchased online earlier this month as part of holiday shopping meant to save both time and money.

With the cold temps comes the need for heat. With the heat should come vigilance by consumers in ensuring that the heat source is not compromised. An expert on the subject, Bishop Fire Chief Ray Seguine, recently offered a laundry list of safety tips to be fire and heat safe this winter season.

Grants are still available through the City of Bishopâs first-time homebuyer assistance program. The assistance comes in the form of loans that will act as a silent second, or a matching amount, for a mortgage.
The program started taking applications in April and still has money available.

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles took a tough loss to the visiting Lucerne Valley Mustangs Saturday.
With the Mustangs ahead 57-59 in the final seconds, the Eagles tried to tie the game up by grabbing the rebound of Mike Cappelloâs intentionally missed free throw. They got the rebound but missed the tip-in. The Mustangs came up with the ball and Lone Pine was faced with a tough loss.
The Eagles outscored the Mustangs in all but the third quarter, but that was the killer. Lucerne scored 21 points to Lone Pineâs 8.

Though they continue to support the Alabama Hills Stewardship Groupâs efforts to have a federal designation placed over the Alabama Hills, county leaders expressed fear that legislation creating a National Scenic area will be put into an omnibus bill.
In a 4-1 vote, the board decided to send a letter of support for the Alabama Hills designation to Senator Dianne Feinstein (CA-D), who has said she would carry the bill if it had community support.
Fourth District Supervisor Marty Fortney voted against the letter, saying he did not support more land designations in the county.

The Big Pine Lady Warriors got off to a strong start Tuesday against the visiting Beatty Hornets. The squad could not maintain the momentum against the aggressive Nevada team and lost 40-66.
âWe are giving great effort,â said coach Dave Mettam, âeven though we came out on the losing end. We played against very experienced girls and did not quit.â
Marissa Lemus led the early assault against the Hornetsâ press, putting Big Pine ahead 6-3.

The Big Pine Warriors had a split decision this week with a 47-66 loss to the Beatty Hornets Tuesday, redeemed by a 57-44 win over the Mammoth Huskies Wednesday.
The players and coaching staff thought the back-to-back games would be a good warm-up for the holiday break and the start of league play. Beatty was slated to send its JV team; Big Pine took Mammoth lightly, according to assistant coach Derek Carrington.
âMammoth started on fire,â said Carrington. âThey came to play. I think that was the best Iâve seen the Huskies play.â

The Bishop Lady Broncos basketball squad avenged an early tournament loss to Mineral County High from Hawthorne, Nev. Tuesday night with a 55-23 rout.
âThe game went well,â said coach Gerald Howard. âWe played very well. Things are really coming together.â
The team struggled with free throws early in the season, but hit 75 percent from the line against Hawthorne.
âWeâre 6-4 in pre-league,â said Howard. âIf weâd been hitting our free throw shots like we did Tuesday, weâd be 9-1.â
