Frances Jane Falck

A graveside gathering to honor Frances Jane Falck will be held at noon Saturday, Nov. 6 at the East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop.
Born in Columbus, Ohio on May 22, 1918, Frances Jane died Oct. 29, 2010 in Eureka Springs, Ark. She was 92.

Turnout at annual cancer walk exceeds expectations

Almost 350 men, women and children from the Eastern Sierra and beyond gathered last weekend to show their moral and financial support for cancer victims far and wide.
A sea of pink – balloons, streamers, T-shirts, hats – greeted spectators and participants of Eastern Sierra Breast Cancer Alliance’s 10th Annual 5K Walk/10K Fun Run at the Bishop City Park on Saturday.

Chicken measure flies with voters

The feathers are still up in the air, but preliminary results show that chickens will be coming home to roost in the City of Bishop.
As of Wednesday morning, the Inyo County Elections Office said that Measure C, dubbed the “Chicken Measure,” received 474 “Yes” votes over 338 “No” votes in Tuesday’s election.

Brown elected governor again, Prop 19 a no-go and Boxer back in

California voters elected Jerry Brown as governor, shot down the legalization of marijuana via Proposition 19 and voted against Proposition 21 that adds an $18 surcharge for vehicle licensing to help support state parks.
Inyo County residents, however, would have elected Meg Whitman as governor and defeated the vehicle licensing fees proposition.
In most cases, Inyo County’s election results differed from the state as a whole, with local residents favoring Republican candidates while the statewide majority of the votes going to Democratic candidates in most races.

Francisca Belem Rael

Funeral services were held Oct. 22, 2010 in Grand Junction, Colo. for Belem Rael.
Born Feb. 7, 1939 in Durango, Mexico, Belem died Oct. 15, 2010 in Monticello, Utah.
Belem was a homemaker and a wonderful mom, nana and great-grandmother. The family said she will be truly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi Rael, Sr., in April 2002 and was laid to rest next to him.

Local youth elect Jerry Brown in straw vote

The future leaders and decision-makers of Inyo and Mono counties – high school students – voted in a mock election on Thursday. The exercise is a way to introduce the soon-to-be voters to the process and for the local electorate to hear and see what the local youth have to say on matters.
Students of all grades, but mostly seniors, voted on four ballot measures, the California gubernatorial race and the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Barbara Boxer.  

Making public lands stewards out of public lands users

Special guest speaker Linda McMillan will lead a conference starting at 9 a.m. Thursday that will explore ways of trying to turn public land users into public lands stewards.
The conference and discussion, “Building Connections to Success,” is being sponsored by the Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association’s Public Lands Partnership Program along with the Inyo National Forest and Bureau of Land Management’s Bishop Field Office.

Crowded ballots await voters today

Voters across the state today will be weighing in on nine ballot measures, selecting local representatives to serve in the House of Representatives, State Senate and State Assembly as well as voting for a new governor.
Locally, residents in the City of Bishop will weigh in on the controversial chicken measure that will determine whether citizens can raise poultry and rabbits within the city limits.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.

Newt Parker Elsdon

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Brune Mortuary Chapel in Bishop for 55-year Bishop resident Newt Parker Elsdon. Private burial will follow at the East Line Street Cemetery.
Born July 29, 1916 in Los Angeles to Emma G. MacDonald Parker and Julian Elsworth Parker, Newt died peacefully surrounded by family friends on Oct. 28, 2010 at the Bishop Care Center.

Angela Patricia Mann

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1 at St. Pius X Church, 209 S. Williams St. in Moberly, Mo. for Angela Patricia Mann.
Angela was born Aug. 9, 1917, in Watsonville to Emile and Pearl Strazicich. She lived in California nearly all her life until moving to Missouri with her daughter, Dorothy Mann, in 2001.
She has resided with Dorothy in Clifton Hill, Mo. for several years.
