BP Warriors beat Cougars in playoffs

The Big Pine Warriors advance to the second round of CIF playoffs with a 34-20 win over the Calvary Baptist Cougars Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars played tough, meeting the Warriors TD for TD. With a 21-20 fourth-quarter score, Ryan Carrington’s interception turned the tide, kicking the Warriors into high gear.
“I’m very pleased with the outcome,” said coach Mark Tilleman. “The kids put themselves in this position (in the playoffs) and they came through.”

Sheriff compiling emergency call database for Inyo

Local law enforcement is trying to contact every household in the county to be sure it has the means to notify all residents of disasters or emergencies in their communities.
The Inyo County Sheriff’s Department tested its CodeRED Emergency Notification System Nov. 4, and is now asking any resident who did not receive an automated call to contact the Sheriff’s Department and have their phone number added to the system.

Fruitcakes returning to Indy

With the advent of the holiday season comes the approach of the internationally acclaimed Independence Fruitcake Festival.
In addition to hosting and showcasing dozens of homemade fruitcakes and eggnog selections, organizers have added a new spin to this year’s event, scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19 in the American Legion Hall in Independence.
Complementing the 2010 theme, “America’s Got Fruitcake” theme, organizers are inviting all Fruitcake Festival attendees to showcase their talents.

Three arrested for recent rash of suspicious fires

A series of small brush fires in the Bishop area over the weekend and past couple weeks have been attributed to arson. According to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department, three residents linked to the crimes were taken into custody Sunday.
The suspects charged with alleged arson and conspiracy to commit arson are Thomas Stone, 18, Jared Manga, 18, and one 16-year-old juvenile, all three from Bishop. Bail for Stone and Manga has been set at $250,000.

A celebration of life barbecue and party will be held in the spring of 2011 at Elks Park in Bishop for Andrea Stanowski.  
Born on Nov. 30, 1948 in Detroit, Mich., Andrea died Nov. 4, 2010 at home in Bishop.
Andrea was an animal caretaker and cook for Rock Creek Pack Station.

Marlene Anne Miller

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17 at East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop for 36-year Bishop resident Marlene Anne Miller. A reception will follow, with details to be announced at the conclusion of the service.
Born Aug. 1, 1931 in Des Moines, Iowa, Marlene died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010 at the Bishop Care Center. She was 79.

L.A. preparing for 3-year solar project on Owens Lake

Officials in Los Angeles are considering two different locations on the Owens Dry Lake that may suit its needs for a proposed 1,600-acre, 200 megawatt solar ranch.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power recently released a Notice of Preparation for an Environmental Impact Report that will determine which site is most suitable for the project, and what impacts the solar ranch will have on the surrounding environment and the community of Lone Pine.

Inyo facing first-responder shortage

There is a shortage of trained, volunteer first responders in the area. From firefighters to emergency medical technicians, Inyo County needs more able-bodied people to help out, and it needs a way to keep the ones it has.
But, as stressed by more than one local leader, “If someone calls 911, someone will answer that call – the ambulance will still arrive.”

A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13 at Mt. Whitney Baptist Church in Lone Pine for Merlin Edgar “Moe” Fletcher. A luncheon will be provided at the church following burial at the Mt Whitney Cemetery.

Born to Harry Carlisle Fletcher and Louise (Mossbacher) Fletcher on Sept. 9, 1923 in Los Angeles, one of three children, Moe died Nov. 1, 2010 at Southern Inyo Hospital in Lone Pine.

A graveside gathering to honor Frances Jane Falck will be held at noon Saturday, Nov. 6 at the East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop.

Born in Columbus, Ohio on May 22, 1918, Jane died Oct. 29, 2010 in Eureka Springs, Ark.
